This paper describes the wear mechanisms of an abrasive grain during the grinding process, and examines the factors affected in the formation of the machined surface for the three kinds of Ti-Al based intermetallic compounds, pure titanium and the two kinds of titanium alloys. The main results are as follows : The Ti-Al based intermetallic compounds have superior machinabilities to the titanium alloys at the performance of wheel wear and surface roughness. From the single point grinding tests using diamond grit, the intermetallic compounds have less value of height coefficient of pile-up in a grinding groove.
