DIAMOND COATED CUTTING TOOLS INCLUDING AN INTER-LAYER THIN FILM AND EVALUATION OF PERFORMANCE

In order to improve the adhesion of diamond coating, this paper propose a CVD diamond coating technique that uses Co-cemented tungsten carbide (WC-Co) material as a substrate by utilizing a thin interlayer of coating called TiAlN that is fixed between the substrate and the thin diamond film. The presence of the thin TiAlN coating prevented that cobalt catalyzes the phase transformation from diamond to non-diamond components (such as graphite). Consequently, the durability of the tool is reinforced. This article describes the thin TiAlN interlayer process and then shows the results of selected durability-cutting tests. The durability of the thin interlayer coating, confirmed through durability-cutting tests, showed it to be an effective technique for diamond coating of WC-Co material. Additionally, the interfaces of the tools that include an interlayer film and those without an interlayer were compared.
