Hardened steels for die and mold, which have improved machinability and toughness by heat treatment, are end milled with ceramic and carbide tools by side cutting method. Cutting forces and tool failure patterns are investigated. Carbide tools wear out rapidly. In end milling with Al_2O_3 ·TiC ceramic tool, severe chipping is occurred. Compared to carbide and Al_2O_3 ·TiC ceramic tool, TiN coated Al_2O_3 ·TiC and SiC-whisker reinforced ceramic tools show superior cutting performance. Hardened tool steel SKD11(JIS) shows the poorest machinability among the hardened steels examined.
