CONCEPTUAL DESCRIPTION OF LANDFARMING FOR SUSTAINABLE RESTORATION OF SOILS WORLDWIDE

Landfarming technology utilizes principles of biological engineering and economics for the management of soil science to accomplish the destruction and detoxification of chemicals that present unacceptable risks to human health and the environment. In addition, landfarming reestablishes the soil as a natural resource that supports nutrient cycling and vegetative growth that contributes to a sustainable biosphere, and therefore is a sustainable technology. Sustainable refers to the use of the soil resource so that the resource is not depleted or permanently damaged. Thus sustainable landfarming emphasizes treatment rather than disposal of added chemicals. Sustainable landfarming is especially applicable as a low cost alternative for restoration of large areas of contaminated soils in developing nations and in demilitarized areas containing residual soil contamination. Sustainable restoration of soil may also be utilized for stimulation of economic development in those impacted areas. There is a need for the development of international manuals of practice to address planning, design, operation and management, and monitoring of these systems. In addition, improved understanding of chemical-soil-microbe interactions through developing assays and methods to measure soil solid-phase toxicity changes, bioavailability, and biological formation of bound residues will result in improved techniques and methods for accomplishing the sustainable restoration of soils worldwide with beneficial and sustainable economic development of restored land.
