A bench-scale pressurized fluidized bed reactor (PFBR) system was employed to treat a complex phenolic waste contaminated groundwater containing 2,4-dimethylphenol, tricresylphosphate and as many as twenty (20) other volatile and semi-volatile organic contaminants. The experimental system consists of two PFBRs operated in series, a biofilter, and a settling tank. Granular activated carbon was added to serve as the adsorbent/biomass carrier in the PFBRs. Experimental results show that the phenol waste degrading microorganisms could be cultured in the PFBR system under an operating hydraulic retention time (HRT) of 1 hour and an organic loading rate of 2.9 kg COD/m~3-day. The PFBR system could continuously remove organic contaminants with influent concentrations up to 7,000 μg/1 (2,4-dimethylphenol) and 2,500μg/1 (tricresylphosphate) to below the GC's detection limits (<5 μg/1 for 2,4-dimethylphenol and < 40μg/1 for tricresylphosphate, respectively). The PFBR system was able to resist a six fold-three hour shock load and recovered within one and a half hours when normal operating conditions were resumed.
