When a polymeric material is deformed, it becomes anisotropic and birefringent. For the case of polymer melts and concentrated solutions, the birefringence, triangle openn can be related to the stress, #sigma#, through the stress-optical rule, SOR. However, the SOR does not hold valid around the glass transition zone.
