摘要

Of all structural types, bridges are probably among those that stay in service well beyond their predicted service life. In fact, in Portugal alone, a reasonable number of roman bridges are still in use. Extending the life-span of existing structures is a current concern of all governments and the scientific community, and railway bridges around the world clearly provide the best possible example to this problem.
