The Composite Affordability Initiative is one example of parametric tools being used to bring about extensive cost reductions during the manufacturing process. By allowing the design team to have an accurate and timely gage on the DFM design alternatives, the tool allows them to focus on the best manufacturing option. It helps them to examine some "obvious" options which in reality aren't so effective. By investing the time to further enhance the software with specific internal processes they have added even more power to their results. This work has laid the foundation for the quick estimation of future projects. The common alternative to parametric cost methods is the laborious "bottoms up" techniques in which a cost analyst parses out portions of estimates to individual departments and then painfully collects them weeks later. By the time that this individual collects - maybe with the use of a networked system - these estimates, many major decisions have been made for the sake of expediency. At this time, nobody wants to restart the painful process in the search for better alternatives. In the end, the companies continue with whatever option they have at hand and hope that it is not too financially detrimental or disastrous. The power of Parametric Cost estimation tools are seen not only in composites but also in electronics, machining, injection molding, fabrication, software development and many other areas. Recognizing its power and investing in its continued enhancement will help companies reduce manufacturing costs and make them more competitive in an aggressive world market.
