Commercial aircraft engine enclosures are required to be fireproof. This project developed a fire test method based on FAA criteria and performed fire tests on a variety of composite laminates and sandwiches. Performance was assessed using the FAA criteria for "fireproofness". To evaluate the residual strength capability of the candidate materials, a uni-axial compression test method was developed. Tests performed on fire-damaged panels were compared to compression tests performed on control (un-damaged) specimens. This work showed that select composite materials and constructions (e.g. sandwich) are viable options for use as fireproof structure in aircraft engine enclosures.
