In the year 2000 P. T. Freeport Indonesia began using Discrete Element Modeling to analyze transfer design. The first test case was on a short 84-inch coarse ore belt with an oblique transfer angle. The primary goal was to reduce belt wear on the receiving belt. The success of that project has led to a series of transfer modifications that have addressed not only belt wear problems, but liner wear, liner placement, and load centering issues. The purpose of this chapter is to highlight a 5-year history of material transfer upgrades at one of the largest copper mines in the world.
