The purpose of this report is to illustrate how the thickness of several different primers and topcoats can accurately be determined with ultrasonic instrumentation. The coating systems involve various combinations of pretreatment, primer (chromate and nonchromate), and topcoat. The coatings were applied to one composite and four different metallic substrates that are found in aviation. The theoretical background of the methodology is explained quantitatively.
