The vibration time-base signal and its associated spectra are functions of the forces in the system and how the structure responds to them. This paper will discuss how that response can make the vibration signals extremely complex through system non-linearity. It discusses two classes of non-linearity- force response and time response. It will demonstrate that beating and modulation are one and the same phenomena and are the result of time response non-linearity. The power series approximation and simple trigonometry do a creditable job of modeling non-linear systems. Computer simulation can help distinguish between the real and the artifact in complex spectra.
