Since the early 1980's the Royal Navy has systematically revised its maintenance policy from one of preventative maintenance carried out at prescribed calendar periods to maintenance procedures that, where applicable, relate to the condition of individual equipment. This has been achieved through the introduction of modern data collection equipment and suitable diagnostic software. The development of this approach, now recognized as Condition Based Maintenance (CBM), has enabled a Reliability Centred Maintenance (RCM) strategy to be established. However, the road to RCM has not been a smooth one and this paper seeks to enlighten the reader on the problems that have been overcome, the problems that still exist, and the challenges that lie ahead.
