This study appears to indicate that neither the TAN/TBN crossover nor the viscosity is the best indicator for determining the remaining useful life of oil. The TBN being consumed does not indicate an oil's remaining oxidation resistance as reliably as the RULER? appears to. The question, "How does the user know when engine oil is worn out?", can be answered by employing a combination of tests, but a an effective monitoring system should include the RULER?.
