The paper gives a theoretical contribution to the area of controllable fluid film bearings, illustrating how to apply "mecha-tronics " to "elstohydrodynamics " towards improving the static and dynamic performance of tilting-pad bearings. Pad compliance as well as controllable radial oil injection are taken into account. The theoretical model gives insights into new design configurations where orifice positioning combined with the controllable radial oil injection make feasible static and dynamic adjustments of bearing preload factors, and consequently the static and dynamic properties of the journal bearings.
