Static and dynamic characteristics of the bearings have an important influence on machine performance. Therefore many efforts have been dedicated for more than 70 years to measure the steady - state and dynamic characteristics of the bearings. A comprehensive review of the methods used to experimentally evaluate the bearing characteristics can be found in [2]. In recent years, it was observed a tendency to evaluate the dynamic properties of the bearings by reproducing the actual motion of the shaft inside the clearance gap as it takes place in a rotating machine, instead of applying shacking or shock loading. The reproduction of the actual motion of the shaft can be easily accomplished by using active magnetic bearings to control the shaft motion [1]. Therefore, this method is very suitable for testing gas lubricated journal or thrust bearings.
