One of the most important experiences that users have with products is that of touch. In fact, the tactile experience has been shown to increase the value that a potential consumer assigns to an object [1]. It is therefore useful for firms to produce favorable tactile experiences when their products are handled. In no industry is this more important than with textiles, where somewhat subjective terms such as 'soft' or 'warm' are used to describe products. Unfortunately, there has been a very limited ability to engineer the tactile experience in a controlled way due to the incredibly complex relationships between tactile attributes and material and physical properties of fabric materials. Some work has been done in this field in the past, but primarily focused on the perceptions caused by contact with fabric materials [2-5]. Thus there is relatively limited information in the public literature about direct correlations between fundamental material properties (such as friction coefficient) and tactile attributes.
