A polymer brush coating based on polyacrylic acid grafted with polyethylene glycol (PAA-g-PEG) was added to a glass substrate by covalent chemical bonding and evaluated in combination with a skin substitute i.e. silicone skin L7350. Comparative test pieces were made by functionalization of a glass substrate with PAA only and by functionalization of a glass substrate with fluoroalkane. Results for the combinations tested at room conditions showed a relatively high level of friction. The use of water changes this for the two layers that are able to capture water in their structure, i.e. PAA and PAA-g-PEG. With effective hydration lubrication [2] it is possible to reduce friction to values below 0.01.
