Protected silver coatings are deposited by electron beam evaporation onto polished stainless steel and aluminum substrates. This process could be used to coat reflectors in the flashlamp-pumped amplifiers of the French Laser MegaJoule (LMJ). High reflectivity in the visible spectral range is expected with good adhesion and long lifetime in a flashlamp environment. We emphasize the effect of substrate surface finishing on specular reflectivity.
