Sunspots absorb and scatter incident f- and p-modes.One suggested absorption mechanism is mode conversionto slow magnetoacoustic-gravity waves, which carrysome of the energy down magnetic field lines into the interior,or, less preferentially, up into the overlying atmosphere.Assuming uniform vertical magnetic field, thismechanism easily explains f-mode absorption, but cannotfully account for the observed absorption of p-modes,especially beyond the first few radial orders. Recently,we have calculated the efficiency of mode conversion inuniform non-vertical magnetic fields assuming two dimensionalpropagation, where the Alfv´en waves decouple.In moderately inclined field (20º-60º) at higherfrequencies (5-6mHz), we found significant absorptionenhancements - up to an order of magnitude. Usingthese two dimensional calculations, Cally, Crouch, andBraun constructed a simplified model for the interactionbetween a sunspot and its surroundings. They found excellentagreement with the observational p-mode absorptionand phase shift data. In this investigation, we determinethe efficiency of mode conversion in non-verticalmagnetic field with three dimensional propagation, wherefast and slow magnetoacoustic-gravity waves and Alfv´enwaves are all coupled.
