An application of heavy tamping method has been used in improving the peaty ground for arnhighway construction project in Sri Lanka. The foundation soil mainly consisted of a 4 m – 5 m thick peatrnlayer with high compressibility and low shear strength. The heavy tamping operation has been designed to enforcernthe anticipated settlement by the construction of a highway embankment on soft ground. The volume ofrncompressed soil compacted during this operation is directly related to enforced settlement within the base arearnof the operation. Strong type band drains were installed in the peaty clay before starting the heavy tamping inrnorder to prevent high excess pore water pressure development in the underneath soil due to the applied energy.rnThe performance of the heavy tamping method has been evaluated by comparing the subsoil profile, field testrnresults and laboratory test results and physical and mechanical properties of soft soil before and after the improvement.rnThe investigation results indicate that the adopted heavy tamping technique is an effective way forrnimproving a soft ground which comprises of peaty clay of shallow thickness in highway construction.
