Compacted bentonite is planned for use as a buffer material in the geological disposal of highlevelrnradioactive waste. The buffer material is required a sealing performance against a leakage of ground waterrncontaminated by radioactivity. In the present paper, density changes and sealing performance of damagedrncompacted bentonite due to shear failure are studied. A series of constant volume direct shear tests was performedrnto observe the failure behavior of both unsaturated and saturated compacted bentonite. The insides ofrnsheared specimens were observed with a micro-focus X-ray CT scanner in order to grasp the density change.rnAccording to the results of the X-ray CT observation, no shear bands or cracks were generated in the saturatedrnspecimen, and no density change was also confirmed. Furthermore, a permeability of the damaged compactedrnbentonoite does not significant change due to the shear failure.
