When a building is ventilated with cool ambient nighttime air, its indoor air and structural mass are cooled by convection, bypassing the thermal resistance of the building envelope. During daytime this cooled mass can serve as a heat sink for the heat penetrating through the fabric and generated inside. This paper deals with the analysis of climatic data and the results of an experiment for evaluating the efficacy of nocturnal convection in creating thermal comfort conditions indoors, particularly in the hot dry and composite climates during summer season in India. Analysis of main climatic factors affecting the performance of nocturnal convective cooling, e.g., maximum, minimum and diurnal range of temperatures as also wind speed and direction for two cities of India situated in the hot dry and composite zones, respectively, are given. Different building construction materials and methods prevalent in these regions are also examined from the point of view of storage of nocturnal coolth in the structural mass taking into account their thermophysical properties etc. The results of an experimental study carried out recently using free and forced night ventilation are also discussed briefly.
