We have built and tested a compact, multi-watt, mid-infrared OPSL-based laser for IRCM applications. This design represents a 6X reduction in size as compared to its predecessor, as well as a significant reduction in cost. These advances have been enabled by the use of a transient thermal storage scheme that allows the use of a compact cryocooler which is already in high volume production for detector applications. The present design is an intermediate step toward a three-band IRCM laser that will be built in essentially the same package. This three-band system will be capable of countering current seekers as well as the next generation of imaging seekers.
