Raman amplification in silica fiber is widely used in telecommunications. Multi-watt Raman lasers have been demonstrated and are commercially available while distributed Raman amplification is used in long-haul telecommunication networks to increase EDFA spacing. To date, laser and amplification wavelengths have been limited to the transmission window of silica fiber, < 2-μm. Recently, however, Raman amplification in IR transmissive chalcogenide glass fiber was demonstrated and Raman gain coefficients 300 times greater than silica at λ =1.5-μm have been measured in As-Se fiber. In this paper, we demonstrate the feasibility of As-Se based Raman fiber lasers and amplifiers in the mid-IR based upon this large Raman gain coefficient and wide mid-IR transparency.
