Fieldable systems employing high energy lasers will require support systems which are also fieldable. One of these necessary support systems is prime electrical power. This paper documents progress made in the initial phase of efforts into optimizing electrical machinery for laser- and microwave-based directed energy weapons. Detailed design parameters and test data in the critical areas of high temperature electrical insulation systems and thermal management approaches which support these designs will be presented. Future development plans in this area will also be addressed. The paper updates a prior one presented at the 2002 SSDLTR which described the planned research.
