Periodically poled Stoichiometric lithium tantalate is a promising material for the frequency conversion of solid-state lasers because of its superior damage resistance and ultraviolet transparency. In addition, the low coercive field of this material (in comparison with the established material, periodically poled lithium niobate) makes it possible to produce crystals which are thicker, and therefore capable of handling higher powers. We have produced quasi-phasematching gratings with thicknesses as large as two millimeters and periods as short as 6 microns. The utility of these structures for generating high average powers in the visible has been demonstrated using the second-harmonic generation of an Nd: YLF laser.
