In this paper, we report about an external cavity diode laser that spectrally beam combines the outputs from seven diode bars to produce 26 Watts at 820nm. Beam combining is a scalable method for generating high-brightness beams, where the technique works by overlaying the outputs of many laser emitters into a single beam, while retaining the beam quality of each emitter. Our method, spectral beam combining (SBC), uses a dispersive laser cavity for beam combination. The cavity that we use, illustrated in Figure 1, is essentially a spectrometer that controls the wavelength of each emitter. Each diode bar contains 200 single-mode emitters. The transform mirror, which is equivalent to a collimating optic in a spectrometer, functions to collimate the output of each emitter, and ideally, to draw all of the emitter outputs to a common location at the grating. The grating is the beam combining element, where all emitter outputs follow a common trajectory between the grating and the output coupler. A slit is introduced to the beam-combined leg to ensure that emitters interact with the cavity individually, thereby suppressing crosstalk. This is necessary to achieve high beam quality.
