This paper presents the details of construction, operation, and monitoring of a 12-hectare (30-acre), two million cubic meter (2,600,000 cubic yard) bioreactor landfill cell at Intersan's Sainte Sophie Landfill in Quebec, Canada. Intersan is a subsidiary of Waste Management, Inc. The first 10 acres (Area A) of the double liner and leachate collection system was constructed in the fall of 2000, and started receiving waste in December 2000. The first, second, and third layers of horizontal recirculation piping and gas collection piping (15 trenches) have been installed in Area A. The gas collection system became operational in April and liquid recirculation started in May 2002. Presently, there are over 1,000,000 tonnes (1,100,000 tons) of waste in place. The second and third 10-acre areas in the bioreactor cell are called Areas B and C. The liner and leachate collection systems in these areas were built in 2001 and both areas started receiving waste in late 2001. The first layer of recirculation /gas collection trenches is being installed in Area B. Design, construction, and operating considerations of the bioreactor cell will be summarized in the paper. Sensors to monitor various bioreactor performance indicators have been installed and monitored since placement of the liner in November 2000. The bioreactor monitoring program includes measurements of head-on-liner, waste temperature and moisture content, waste composition, leachate flow rate and composition, gas flow rate and composition, and settlement rates. Preliminary monitoring data will be presented.
