Three of the most common tools used to evaluate soil losses on landfill final cover systems are discussed. These tools include the Universal Soil Loss Equation (USLE), the Revised Universal Soil Loss Equation (RUSLE), and the Water Erosion and Prediction Project Model (WEPP). This paper provides background on each of the three tools, discusses how each is applied to landfill design and evaluation, and pros and cons associated with each. Examples are provided of how each tool would be used to assess soil losses under differing conditions. The paper concludes by providing a discussion regarding common practices at landfills to reduce erosion with specific examples of control mechanisms used in different cases where excessive soil loss was either occurring or likely.
