A new technique for the injection of steel powder has been developed by CRM in order to enlarge the fraction of equiaxed crystals and to reduce the center-line segregation in as-cast products. The concept is to inject during solidification in the mould a fine steel powder through a Hollow Jet Nozzle designed by CRM.rnPreliminary tests performed on a cold simulator have helped to define the most suitable conditions for reaching a steel powder flow rate of 3 kg/min.rnSeveral campaigns with liquid steel carried out on CRM facilities have allowed casting at a sub-liquidus temperature when up to 1% of steel powder was added in the mould. The product examination has confirmed the effectiveness of the technique and highlighted the clear benefit gained by the powder injection. The new technique leads to a fully equiaxed solidification structure in the as-cast product and to an absence of centerline segregation.
