Electron Microscopical Studies of As-Cast and Austempered Structures in a High Mn Ductile Iron

Microstructural features of an alloyed Ductile Iron (DI) of composition: 3.5%C, 2.64%Si, 0.25%Cu, 0.25%Mo, 0.67%Mn, 0.007%P, 0.013%S and 0.04% Mg in the as-cast and austempered conditions are described. EPMA and EDX show a strong segregation of carbon and carbide forming elements like Mn and Mo to intercellular areas in both the as-cast and austempered structures. TEM studies show that the structure of carbides formed in the intercellular areas and within the eutectic cells are different. Carbides of the form M_6C and M_(23)C_6 were found in the intercellular areas (M is the mixture of carbide forming elements present in the carbide). The composition, location and amount of carbide formed in the eutectic cell is dependent on the austempering heat treatment cycle.
