The purpose of this paper is to present an engineering study of the electromagnetic sheidling effectiveness of composite materials used in space applications. The objective of the study is to identify and quantify the important electrical characteristics of composite materials proposed as substitutes for conventional metal-based structural elements of spacraft. Current design practices utilized by various developers of spacecaft, particularly those with survivability and endurements, employ variations of design constraints which rely on quantifiable and testable control of electromagnetic topology. These design practices are based on extensive knowledge and experience gained through analyses and tests of cofigurations on meatallic structures and metal-enclosed electronics boxes. The purose of this study is to determine, analystically and experimentally, the relevant electromagnetic characteristics of selected classes of composite material being recommended for inclusion in designs of new spacecraft systems. This study surveyed existing electronagnentic databases to determine known electrical characteristics of various advanced composite materials proposed as substitutes for spacecraft matal-based structures and enclosure materials. Particular attention was foused on determining he utility of this data in quantify ing the electromagnetic shielding effectivness through nominal bulk properties such as resistvity/conductivity and electrical connectivity through bonds/joints. For a select set of composite material, an experimental approach to evaluage the important electronagnetic characteristics of sample configurations was used. Primary material foucs of this study is on cargon/epoxy, graphite/epoxy, and cabon/cyanate ester materials.
