Single-well tracer testing has been widely accepted as arnstandard method for measuring residual oil saturation tornwaterflood. Residual oil saturation is an importantrnparameter in the evaluation of tertiary oil recoveryrnpotential for depleted reservoirs. At an advanced stage ofrndepletion, Leduc, a Canadian carbonate reservoir, hasrnbeen considered as a candidate for enhanced oilrnrecovery. As part of the evaluation process, single-wellrntracer tests were conducted at two watered-out producersrnto determine residual oil saturation to waterflood. Therntracer production profiles were found to be highlyrnskewed with long tails and early arrival times, which arerntypical for carbonate reservoirs. Two different models,rnnamely a double-porosity model where tracer couldrndistribute between the flowing and non-flowing poresrnthrough mass transfer and a single-porosity model whererna fictitious water drift rate was assumed in the test zone,rnwere used to interpret the data. It was found that eitherrnmodel could match the data to the same degree ofrnaccuracy regardless of the flow mechanisms assumedrnand the residual oil saturation derived from these twornmodels were 35% and 38% respectively. Thisrndemonstrates the robust nature of the test that the nonuniquenessrnof the match does not affect residual oilrnsaturation determination. The residual oil saturationrndetermined by simple analytical models including massrnbalance method, peak method and mean retentionrnvolume method were all in the range of 34% to 38%, inrnexcellent agreement with the simulation results. Asrnwell, the Sorw obtained by the SWTT method comparedrnfavorably with those determined by interwell tracingrn(35%) and sponge coring (33%).
