When Petronas Carigali, the national oil company ofrnMalaysia, planned the development of its platform EWDP-Arnoffshore Sabah, they did so on the basis of using coiled tubingrnfor any thru-tubing workover operations which were neededrnwhile the drilling rig was still in place. In this way therndrilling rig could be fully utilized for drilling operations, thusrnmaximizing the efficiency of, and minimizing the total timernfor, the development. Well EW 117 was completed on thisrnplatform as a level 6 Multilateral in July 2000 with dual 3-1/2”rntubing strings accessing two laterals with measured depths ofrn14,910ft. And 15,236ft., respectively. The clean-out andrnperforation operations commenced with coiled tubing with thernrig assisting. However, due to a combination of the tortuosityrnand the lengthy horizontal sections of the laterals, it was notrnpossible to reach bottom with coiled tubing because of thernhigh frictional forces encountered.rnAfter consideration of several alternatives arnfeasibility study was undertaken to explore the possibility ofrnusing a Hydraulic Workover (Snubbing) unit to perform the –rnthru-tubing operations concurrent with the continuing drillingrnactivity. The study concluded that, with some customrndesigned handling equipment, a special tapered workstringrnand strict adherence to a permissible concurrent activityrnmatrix, this approach was indeed feasible. The operation wasrnperformed in February 2001 and the well made available forrnproduction by the beginning of March. Throughout thernworkover operation the drilling rig sequence remained inrnaccordance with plans, apart from a period of 14 hoursrndowntime while moving the Snubbing unit into its workingrnlocation.rnThis paper will review the problem encountered, thernmotive forces applicable, the feasibility study and the resultantrncustom designed equipment and workover operation. It willrndiscuss on the integrated team approach and detailed planning,rnin which active participation from Petronas Carigali, therndrilling contractor and several service companies resulted in arnsuccessful operation.
