This paper presents a study of a gas re-injection project,rndesigned with the dual objectives of emissions reduction andrnenhanced oil recovery in an Australian offshore oil field. Arnsignificant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions has beenrnachieved since the project commenced late in 1999, with somern1.3 million tonnes of CO2 emissions avoided in year 2000rnalone. Miscible displacement is expected to add around 6rnmillion barrels to ultimate recovery from the Corallinarnreservoir, and use of stored gas as fuel is expected to achievernsignificant reductions in operational expenditure later in fieldrnlife.rnGas injection for the purposes of enhancing oil recoveryrnhas been common oilfield practice for several decades. Manyrntechnical papers have been written on this subject, from bothrntheoretical and practical points of view. Projects that focusrnexclusively on greenhouse gas control (either by sequestrationrnor emission reduction) are less common, although the level ofrnresearch is rapidly increasing as environmental awarenessrnspreads throughout the industry. The Laminaria / Corallina gasrnre-injection project is designed to achieve both objectives.
