Shell Exploration & Production Co. (SEPCo) began workingrnon ISO 14001certification of its United States Exploration &rnProduction business late in 1999. An early step in the processrnwas aligning the certification strategy with how thernorganization manages environmental issues and wherernaccountability for the registration is best placed. SEPCo’srnstrategy was finalized in March 2000 and called forrncertification of all E&P operation under a single certificate byrnOctober, 2001.rnA single certificate for all of SEPCo was a significantrnchallenge because of numbers of staff across a wide variety ofrnoperations and geographical dispersion. Operations includedrnin the certification include: Offshore Gulf of Mexico drillingrnand producing operations (5 tension leg platforms, 11 majorrnfixed leg production facilities, 75 minor fixed leg productionrnfacilities), Onshore drilling and producing operations in 3rnthree different states (12 production facilities, 3 gas plants) asrnwell as support services in 12 different states (offices,rnlogistics, retained properties).rnAchievement of certification over this broad spectrum ofrnoperations with total SEPCo and Contract staff of over 3000rnwas accomplished through the use of multiple training mediarnto increase awareness regarding the requirements of ISOrn14001. Training tools used in this effort included: a locationspecific,rnweb-based risk management database with integratedrnComputer Based Training, interactive dialog exercises,rnpersonal preparation worksheets, varied internalrncommunication media, and ISO 14001 workbooks.rnOperations training execution was accomplished by a corernteam of three individuals but utilized a HSE operationsrnnetwork previously existing within the company.rnThis train-the-trainer model allowed for cost effectiverntraining to all parts of the organization with the mostrnintense focus on staff who control SEPCo's significantrnenvironmental aspects.rnThis varied list of training tools allowed SEPCo to achievernone of the largest single registrations to ISO 14001. Therntraining suite is also a core component to SEPCo’s strategy forrnmaintaining certification in the future.
