In Hungary, underground gas storage (UGS) projects have been launched in depleted natural gas reservoirs. Sand only appeared in the well streams after the eighth year of operating the gravel packed and sand-filtered UGS facilities. In order to prevent from surface and down-hole failures, sand-detecting apparatus working on erosion basis was mounted onto the wells. In the detector the well stream is directed through a properly shaped obstructer to a tubular probe. Sand-free well stream does not erode the probe, appearing solids, however puneture it and this can be detected. The equipment is calibrated on each well by solids having the same characteristic grain size and material as those in the reservoir.
