This paper presents an overview of the air pollution problem in Alexandria, the second capital and main port of Egypt. Alexandria generates about 40% of Egypt's industrial activity along with considerable opportunity for air emissions. The main sources of air pollution are reviewed and levels of air quality over different sectors of the city are represented in this paper. Results reveal that the pollutant of greatest concern is particulate matter. Average annual Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) matter levels during the study ranged from about 132 to 250 ug/m~3 over different areas of the city, thus exceeding Egypt's annual Air Quality Standard (AQS). Particulate matter levels at street level were almost 2.5 times community ambient air levels (400 to 727 ug/m~3). On the other hand, average SO_2 levels in ambient air varied from 26 to 34 parts per billion (ppb), also in excess of the established AQS. The degradation is likely to increase due to continuing increases in population, traffic density and industrialization. To ensure a sound environmental program in Egypt, actions should be directed towards establishment of a complete, dynamic emission inventory program. This will provide a fundamental building block for developing an effective Air Quality Control and Maintenance Strategy.
