Dry Deposition of Metals in Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA)

The Emission Inventory for Mexico City Metropolitan Area (MCMA) called DATGEN, developed by National Institute of Ecology, includes information on five criteria pollutants (O3, NOx, SOx, CO and PST). However, the database also contains important information on industries using raw materials and output processes that can be linked to metals emissions to the atmosphere. A sampling campaign of the Acid Deposition Program was conducted during 1997. Dry deposition samples were obtained at 10 sites in the MCMA. The chemical analyses show the presence of metals such as Aluminum (Al), Copper (Cu), Iron (Fe), Manganese (Mn), Lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn) among others These metals were classified at time intervals according to their concentration in % weight. A deposition flux (mg/d.m2) study was done using spatial distribution maps of elements with more than 0.01% of sample weight. The results show the distribution of these metals in the MCMA atmosphere. In spite of some elements appearing in small concentrations, they could still cause damage to the aquatic and terrestrial environment, to human health, and also metals like Fe and Mn participate as catalysts in SO2 oxidation which is an acid rain precursor. This study precedes studies of metals in wet deposition and additional studies of metals in dry deposition. Quality assurance procedures were conducted in order to obtain data on accuracy, precision and representativeness in addition to the processes of sampling, handling, storage, chemical laboratory analyses, data assessment and site performance, according to the goals of the study.
