Comparison of Patterns of Ammonium Concentration in Precipitation to Ammonia Emission Estimates

Global emission estimates of ammonia have been published, with the most recent being the Bouwman et al.(1997) results. Some aspects of these emission estimates are compared to the national precipitation quality database produced by the National Atmospheric Deposition Program/National Trends Network (NADP/NTN). In particular, since ammonia emissions resulting from livestock production is estimated to be the largest source category, the spatial and temporal patterns for this source category are compared to the NADP/NTN ammonium data. The NADP/NTN began in 1978 with fewer than 25 sites and grew steadily to become a network of 200 sites by 1985. The database has about a six-month time lag so data through 1997 are currently available. Rain and snow samples are collected weekly, on Tuesday morning, at network sites across the USA. The same equipment and procedures are used at all the sites. All samples are sent to a central laboratory, at the Illinois State Water Survey and analyzed for inorganic ions including ammonium. The spatial pattern of ammonia emissions will be compared to the precipitation concentration patterns, as opposed to deposition patterns. The preliminary examination suggests that there is general consistency between the spatial and temporal patterns in ammonia emissions from livestock and the ammonium concentration in precipitation. Much additional research is needed including an examination of the patterns and trends for the other major ammonia emission sources.
