Estimating Emissions from Water-Based Processes in the Textile Industry

The methods used to calculate VOC and volatile HAP emissions from processes using water varies greatly within the textile industry. Estimates based on engineering judgement of the proportion of individual components being emitted, or assumptions of 100% evaporation of all volatile components are both common practice in the industry. Currently, no reliable emission factors are available. Textile processes using water include the use of dyes, sizing agents, finishing agents, etc. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and textile industry trade associations plan to perform source testing on these types of sources; however, no two processes are alike and it may be some time before the analysis of these source tests result in any new guidance on calculating emissions from these sources. In working with a textile manufacturer, PES has developed an approach (using i-STEPS~(~R)) to calculate emissions based on the mass-transfer calculations presented in AP-42, Section 4.3 (Waste Water Collection, Treatment and Storage). This method uses chemical-specific variables along with process-specific variables to approximate emissions based on these definable quantities. This paper describes the application of this methodology to a dyeing operation (dye range), and modifications to the AP-42 equations that were necessary to use this method in textile processes. This emissions estimation method provides a more scientifically-based assessment of emissions from water-based processes than is commonly used in the textile industry.
