摘要

The electricity industry is undergoing profound structural changes that could substantially affect patterns of electricity generation in the United States. Since most electricity generators will be competing to sell power into a large interconnected transmission system, air quality regulators will need to know how emission patterns change when market forces are allowed to operate. Many consumers, when given a choice of suppliers, will want to know how each supplier's electricity is generated and what pollutants they put into the air. In fact, an increasing number of advocacy groups and regulators are calling for nationwide disclosure of the relative emission rates and resource mix of electricity suppliers. Although virtually all of the data needed to compare emissions and resource mix for different power plants and generating companies are presently available to the public, they exist in disparate data bases. In an effort to organize these diverse sources of data, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is developing the Emissions & Generation Resource Integrated Database (E-GRID) to provide a single, comprehensive data base of generation, emissions, and related data for every power plant and generating company in the U.S. that provides electricity through a centralized power grid.
