In general, sand production in oil/gas reservoirs in weakrnformations has an adverse impact on production costs. Forrnefficient reservoir management, predictive tools are needed tornquantitatively mitigate and control sand production. A fullyrncoupled sand production model that integrates geomechanicsrnand fluid flow was developed to quantify volumetric sandrnproduction during the early drawdown period (a few days),rnbean-up, as well as in the depletion period (a number ofrnyears).rnFirst, we compared simulation results from the proposedrnmodel to sand production data from full-scale laboratoryrnperforation sanding tests for model verification. Then, wernemployed the developed model to evaluate the key variablesrnthat govern volumetric sand production. This study indicatesrnthat sand production in weak reservoirs is influenced by arnnumber of variables. These include rock strength, flow rate,rnoil viscosity, and producing time. The simulation resultsrnrelating cumulative sand production and sand production raternto these important variables are presented. Descriptions of thernvolumetric sand production model (formulations, constitutivernequations, solutions procedures) are also presented.rnThe study suggests that the proposed model may be used torngenerate quantitative information for predicting volumetricrnsand production. This provides a tool for sand-management inrnexploiting the weakness of sanding-prone scenarios.
