Preserved shale samples, from four different shale cores, werernexposed to various fluids while under simulated downholernstress conditions. Prior to fluid exposure, the samples werernnot contacted by any aqueous fluid, including simulated porernfluid. Time-dependent measurements of pore pressure,rnswelling and acoustic velocities were made. Pore pressuresrnboth less than and greater than the applied fluid pressure werernobserved, and apparent osmotic membrane efficiencies arerncalculated. Swelling was found to depend not only on thernshale type and the fluid, but also on the level of confiningrnstress. Swelling anisotropy was observed. Acoustic velocitiesrnwere found to change as a result of fluid exposure, and thernamount of change is dependent on the fluid type and on thernexistence of swelling.
