A laminated and fissured formation around a horizontalrnborehole is modeled as a combination of intact rock blocksrnand permeable fractures with a DEM code. The model is usedrnfor understanding the mechanism of rock failure problemsrnobserved in a shale formation of an offshore field. Differentrnmud weights and stress conditions are applied to the model tornsimulate the rock failure around deviated holes in laminatedrnand fissured shale.rnThe numerical simulation shows that shear failure alongrnthe bedding planes is the predominant mode of collapse of thernhole when mud under pressures penetrate into bedding planesrnon which shear stress is applied. The severity of wellborerninstability varies with stress states and wall conditions. Therneffect of a plugging agent in mud is verified by comparisonrnbetween permeable and impermeable wellbore models.
