The innovative application of horizontal drillingrntechnology has made the Petrozuata development project inrnVenezuela a great success. Petrozuata is the first of fourrnstrategic associations implementing an integrated developmentrnin the Faja trend, which contains 1.36 trillion barrels of oil inrnplace and is one of the world’s largest heavy oilrnaccumulations. The joint venture of Petroleos de Venezuela,rnS.A. (PDVSA) and Conoco, Inc., drilled 101 single lateral andrn140 multi-lateral horizontal wells in the Zuata Field from 1998rnto 2001 as a means of delivering production rates of up torn3000 BOPD per well from reservoir sands of 8° to 10° API oil.rnWell test interpretation and analysis techniques have beenrnapplied to both single and multi-lateral horizontal wells. Thisrnpaper summarizes the methodology developed to analyzernpressure build up (PBU) tests in the single lateral horizontalrnwells and recent experiences with the application of state ofrnart PBU analysis techniques in the Zuata field wells.rnBecause of the geological complexity of the fluvial-deltaicrnreservoir sands and the peculiar transient pressure behavior, itrnwas necessary to integrate analytical techniques that identifiedrnthe various flow regimes with numerical analysis that furtherrnquantified the analytic interpretation. The integrated approachrnallowed for improvements in the conventional analyticalrninterpretation and provided a basis of incorporatingrnrefinements in the reservoir description when combined withrngeological and petrophysical data and interpretation.
