Objective of this study is the calibration of coarse resolution satellite data (NOAA AVHRR LAC 1km × 1km) covering the entire area of interest by samples of high resolution data (LANDSAT TM 30m × 30m) within a framework of the TREES (Tropical Ecosystem Environment Observations by Satellites) project. A set of readily interpreted AVHRR data from continental South-East Asia and from South America were used as test data set. The sampling design uses stratification of the AVHRR data by forest cover and forest fragmentation, the latter quantified by a simple fragmentation indexrnBlocks of TM and AVHRR frames were coregistered. Forest cover and fragmentation, measured in the blocks were used as explaining variable in the calibration regression to predict forest cover on TM. The calibration regression is calculated separately for each stratum and yields a corrected estimate of AVHRR forest cover.
