Abstract: Commonly used methods of developing paints andevaluating their performance involves calculating thesignatures of vehicles and backgrounds, this requiresexperimental determination of the directional andbidirectional reflectance of the surfaces involved. This paper describes the measurements required, theinstruments used to make such measurements, andcomputer codes and techniques used for paintdevelopment and signature evaluation. Examples ofbidirectional reflectance data obtained using fullexperimental mapping are presented. Applications ofBRDF data in IR paint development are demonstrated withemphasis on validation and confirmation of computermodeling codes. Calculations of signatures using BRDFdata are given using bidirectional reflectance data fortwo different coatings.!2
