Available research suggests that properly detailed unbonded braced frames (UBF's), also known as buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBF's), can perform reliably when subjected to seismic ground motions. This paper describes the expected behavior of UBF's, some of the analytical studies performed to date, the expected load that can be developed in the braces, and the provisions being proposed to codify its design. A preliminary design guideline for calculation of UBF's is presented.
